גאווה

Tגאווה is a biblical word meaning rising both spiritually and physically.

This is one of the reasons the word גאווה and words related to it (verbs, adjectives…) can be used in both positive (pride) and negative (egotism) ways:

אני גאה בך – I’m proud of you

גאוותן - an arrogant person

ערך = value

חלק מ = part of

להט"ב = LGBT

חשוב = important

מצעד = parade

Pride (גאווה) is a sense of worth (ערך), when a person connects his/her (or his/her group) successes to himself/herself, his/her actions, or the things he/she is a part of (חלק מ).

"Healthy" pride (גאווה) is an important (חשוב) emotion that motivates and helps individuals feel part of (חלק מ) groups or something big and important (חשוב).

When a collective feel too much pride (גאווה גדולה מדיי), sees himself/herself as higher and more important (חשוב) than others, when he/she is filled with pride (גאווה) in a disproportionate way - it is sometimes called arrogance or megalomania.

In history, we have many stories about pride (גאווה) being often a bad and negative emotion:

  • The Bible has the classic story of the Tower of Babel;

  • In Greek and Roman culture there is a clear difference between healthy pride (גאווה) and the "hubris”;

  • The new world has the story of the Titanic - a symbol of human megalomania versus the power of nature.

This month is Gay Pride Month= חודש הגאווה an (almost) international observance of gay parades מצעדי הגאווה promoting the self-affirmation and increased visibility of LGBT (להט"ב) people as a social group.

In this case, pride (גאווה) = is the opposite of shame, presenting who we are as a person, not being ashamed of our identity.

This is a good opportunity to check yourself – are you proud of who you are without looking down on others?
